PREPARATION

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS
Helpful Hint: Think of the round brush as a small flat brush. Always use one flat side of the brush or the remaining flat side of the brush. The pull or lifted color is always kept facing up. Do not turn these colors down unless specified.
Leaves
1. Basecoat dark leaves with brush mix of Avocado and a little Prussian Blue.
2. Pull Olde Gold on one flat side of brush and pull Titanium White on top of Olde Gold. Start at tip end of leaf and turn some with green side down, some with white side down to create variety. Add additional paint as needed. This is stroke work and is not blended. If you do not like the color or the shape of the leaf, just restroke the leaf.
Red Violets
1. Brush mix Napthol Red and a touch of Prussian Blue and a pull of Titanium White.
2. Apply two back petals. Pull more white for side petals.
3. Lift white and scribble dribble front petals.
Purple Violets
1. Brush mix Prussian Blue and a little Napthol Red.
2. Pull white and apply two back petals. Add more white for remaining side petals.
3. Lift white and scribble dribble front petals.
Violet Detailing
1. Dampen the throat area with water. Apply a wash of Cadmium Yellow.
2. Add two small strokes of white and several tiny dots of Napthol Red. Paint thin black lines for beard.
Ferns
Fill round brush with Avocado and a little Prussian Blue. Pull Prussian Blue on one flat side of brush, then pull a little white on top of the blue. Keep white side of the brush up as you pull strokes of the fern.
Full View Carnation
1. Fill round brush with Country Red, making the brush flat.
2. Pull a little Olde Gold on one flat side of the brush; lift white on top of the Olde Gold. (Never allow white to touch red.)
3. Set brush down with white up and Country Red touching surface. Fan out the bristles only one quarter of a circle.
4. Just barely lift ferule from surface and push brush forward until bristles extend just beyond pattern line.
5. Pull back slowly until you are where you started the stroke. Lift brush from surface and refill white.
6. Repeat for each stroke. (Refer to worksheet for help.)
7. Add Avocado to dirty brush and apply calyx and stem.
Buds
1. Using colors of your choice, set the brush down and fan it out slightly. Pull and lift.
2. After lifting, apply a second stroke partially on top of first stroke.
3. Add Avocado and apply calyx and stem.
Glazing
1. Brush mix one part Light Buttermilk and four parts Faux Glazing Medium. Apply around oval with large, flat brush.
2. While still wet, dab with crumpled plastic bag.
Strokework
Do strokes around oval with script brush filled with Raw Sienna and a little white.
FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS
Coat with DuraClear Varnish, using large, flat brush.
