Basket, 9B, Pesky Bear Baskets (716-942-3250)
|
Preparation: Basecoat lid top Blue Chiffon. Sand lightly between coats. Trace on pattern. Handles, edge of lid, and two basket rims are Williamsburg Blue. Strokework trim on rims and handles are 2:1 brush mix of Blue Chiffon and Williamsburg Blue.
Background color, shading, and ground
Wet open area above design with clean water. Apply small amount of Melon and soften with large mop brush. Repeat with areas of Pineapple and Williamsburg Blue. (These should be faint blushes of color.)
Add blush of Hauser Medium Green in area of flowers. Using 1/2" flat brush or larger, softly shade around objects of still life with Khaki Tan. Table is sheer coat of Mississippi Mud. Deepen color at top line and under objects on table.
Cloth
Basecoat cloth Bleached Sand. Shade top of cloth, under objects on cloth, and in folds with floats of Cool Neutral. Highlight edges and top of fold with Snow White. Using #8 flat brush, plaid is stripes of thinned Country Red.
Shade again with brush mix of Cool Neutral and Khaki Tan. Highlight again with Snow White. Edge cloth with fine line of Snow White.
Birdhouse
Using 1/2" flat brush, basecoat birdhouse with dry streaks of Williamsburg Blue. Softly shade with dry streaks of Traditional Burnt Umber.
Add wood graining lines with Traditional Burnt Umber and a few more with mix of Williamsburg Blue and Snow White. Highlight with dry streaks of Snow White. Softly enhance shade areas with soft floats of Traditional Burnt Umber.
Hole is Mississippi Mud shaded with Traditional Burnt Umber and highlighted with touch of Cool Neutral. Outline right side with mix of Williamsburg Blue and Snow White. Perch is Mississippi Mud shaded with Traditional Burnt Umber and highlighted with Khaki Tan.
Roof and wire hanger are basecoated Grey Sky, shaded with brush mix of Payne’s Grey and Charcoal Grey, and highlighted with Snow White. Tint edges with floats of Light Cinnamon for touch of rust.
Clay Pots
Basecoat pots Shading Flesh, shade with Light Cinnamon, and highlight with brush mix of Shading Flesh and Snow White. Set two pots in basket with float of Traditional Burnt Umber.
Basket
Using 1/2" flat brush, basecoat basket with double-loaded brush of Desert Sand and Sable Brown. (As you stroke on vertical lines, Sable Brown is on right side of brush. As you stroke on horizontal bands, Sable Brown in on lower side of brush.)
Shade basket with brush mix of Sable Brown and Light Cinnamon. Highlight with floats of brush mix of Pineapple and Desert Sand. Nails are touch of Payne’s Grey and Snow White.
NOTE: Paint basket handle after you have painted alyssum flowers, using basket colors.
Glove
Glove is basecoated Bleached Sand, shaded with Charcoal Grey, and highlighted with Snow White. Plaid is fine lines of Williamsburg Blue. Shade and highlight glove again.
Alyssum
Using 1/2” deerfoot brush, stipple background of flowers with Hauser Medium Green. Using #4 flat brush, add small one stroke leaves with random mixes of Hauser Dark Green, Hauser Medium Green, and Foliage Green.
Using #2 flat or filbert brush, flower petals are Snow White; centers are dot of Pineapple.
Paint basket handle using colors of basket.
Geranium
Stems and leaves are basecoated Light Avocado. Shade with floats of Avocado along bottom edge of the leaves or where needed to separate leaves. Deepen shading with floats of Evergreen.
Highlight other side of leaves with floats of Foliage Green. Repeat with touches of Colonial Green and Spa Blue.
Center veins are brush mix of Spa Blue and Light Avocado. Tint some leaves with sheer floats of Antique Rose.
Blossom areas are roughly basecoated Antique Rose. Shade right or lower side with rough float of Country Red. Highlight left or upper side with rough float of Melon.
Using #2 flat brush, blossom petals on shade side are double-load of Country Red and Melon. Petals on highlight side are double-load of Antique Rose and Bubblegum Pink. Centers are dots of Pineapple. Shade shade side again with sheer float of Country Red. Highlight highlighted side with sheer float of Americana Neons Fiery Red.
Unopened blossoms hanging down are Antique Rose, highlighted with touch of Bubblegum Pink. Calyx are strokes of Avocado.
Checked pot of violets
Basecoat pot with Light Buttermilk. Shade with soft floats of Charcoal Grey and highlight with back-to-back float of Snow White. Using #4 flat brush, checks are Colonial Green. Softly shade pot again with Payne’s Grey and highlight with Snow White. Separate sections with float of brush mix of Payne’s Grey and Charcoal Grey. Stipple flower area with Light Avocado.
Using #6 flat brush, leaves are random mix of Foliage Green, Hauser Medium Green, and Spa Blue. Using #4 flat brush, upper two petals of the flowers are Lavender with touch of Snow White on edge. Bottom two petals are double load of Lavender into Wisteria. Center is two strokes of Pineapple with dot of Snow White. Add a few filler vines and tiny leaves with Evergreen.
Clay pot of seed packets
Basecoat pot with Shading Flesh, shade with Light Cinnamon, and highlight with brush mix of Shading Flesh and Snow White. Deepen some shadows with floats of Traditional Burnt Umber. Basecoat seed packets Desert Sand. Shade to separate them with Sable Brown.
Trim lines are Antique Rose, Colonial Green, Williamsburg Blue, and Avocado. Highlight packet edges with Snow White.
Trowel
Metal sections are basecoated Grey Sky; wood handle is Colonial Green. Shade both sections with Payne's Grey and highlight with Snow White. Deepen shading on metal sections with Charcoal Grey. Re-establish lower edge of trowel with line of Grey Sky.
Finishing details
Shade to separate objects with soft floats of Traditional Burnt Umber. Vines in lower right corner of lid are Traditional Burnt Umber with one-stroke leaves of random mix of Avocado, Light Avocado, and Spa Blue. Lettering is brush mix of Williamsburg Blue and Payne’s Grey.
Allow painting to dry thoroughly. Erase any visible tracing lines. Varnish with at least three coats of DuraClear Satin Varnish.
