PREPARATION:
Remove purse hardware with small screwdriver and set aside. Sand box with fine sandpaper to smooth grain. Remove dust with soft, clean cloth and apply generous coat of Americana Wood Sealer inside and out. Let dry, then re-sand lightly. Use ruler to draw 1-1/4" border around purse lid.
1. Paint outside border around purse lid, sides, back, and inside lip Lamp Black using glaze/wash brush. Let dry. (Figure 1).
2. Tape off Lamp Black border on lid with blue painter's tape. (Be sure to press tape edge down firmly to avoid paint seepage). (Figure 2)
3. Turn purse lid upside down so that hinged side is at top and latch/handle side is at bottom. Using #14 round brush, paint inner area, working with wet on wet paint, diagonally from upper left to lower right: start with Cocoa at top left and along left edge filling in 1" or 2". Then with dirty brush pick up Bahama Blue and continue basing, softening where two colors meet with slip-slap motion. (Figure 3).
4. Keep going in this manner, adding more Bahama Blue at middle, then picking up Bleached Sand toward lower right. (Go back and add color as needed but do not overwork it. You want a gradual transition from color to color from upper left to lower right.)
5. While paint is still slightly wet, carefully remove painter's tape and let dry.
If any paint has seeped under tape onto Lamp Black border, touch up with Lamp Black.
6. Using #14 round brush, stencil 3/8" checks on border with Dark Espresso. (Don't put too much paint on at once, or it may seep under stencil edges.) (Figure 4).
7. Transfer leaf design onto purse front with gray graphite paper.
8. With 1/4" angular brush, paint in leaves, blending colors wet on wet as follows:
Top Left Leaf: Start basing with Avocado Dip at base of leaf and work to Mustard Seed and Orange Twist as you come toward tip at lower right. (This leaf should be mostly orange/yellow with a little green at top left.) Bottom Left Leaf: Start basing with Avocado Dip at top and right and add some Mustard Seed at bottom and left. (This leaf should be mostly green with touch of yellow.) Middle Right Leaf: Start basing with Orange Twist at top left and work to Tuscan Red at lower right. (This leaf should be mostly red with orange tint at upper left.) (Figure 5)
9. With 1/4" angular or 1/2" glaze/wash brush, float shading and highlighting as follows: Top Left Leaf: Float along veins with Orange Twist and touch of Tuscan Red. Float shade some edges along top of leaf with Avocado Dip and Cocoa. Float highlight some bottom edges with Bleached Sand. Bottom Left Leaf: Float veins with Avocado Dip and touch of Cocoa. Float shade some edges along top of leaf with Avocado. Float highlight some bottom edges with Bleached Sand. Middle Right Leaf: Float veins with Tuscan Red and touch of Lamp Black. Float shade some leaf edges with Tuscan Red and touch of Lamp Black. Float highlight some edges with Orange Twist. (Figure 6)
10. Paint stems Avocado. With script liner brush, stroke in veins on leaves with Avocado and touch of Lamp Black.
11. The accents should be softly floated or drybrushed so they don't overpower colors beneath. For floating, use 1/2" glaze/wash brush; for drybrushing, use #14 round brush, as follows: Top Left Leaf: Float accents of Festive Green at top edge of leaf on either side of stem. Float Festive Red on some edges. Float a little Rich Espresso on top edge of second finger of leaf. Bottom Left Leaf: Float Festive Green on top edges of leaf. Float a little Festive Red on right edge of bottom center point. Float a little Rich Espresso on two or three other edges. Middle Right Leaf: Float Festive Red on some edges. Float a little Rich Espresso on some shaded edges. (Figure 7)
12. Float a little Bahama Blue here and there on all leaves, on a few edges, and along veins (keep to lighter side). With script liner brush, finely outline leaves with mix of Avocado and touch of Lamp Black.
13. Brush a little Festive Green along leaf stems using script liner brush.
14. Drybrush a little Bahama Blue on background between leaves and a little Tuscan Red and Rich Espresso in right corners. (If needed, soften these colors by floating over with Cocoa.)
15. With stencil and mix of Bahama Blue and touch of Cocoa, paint scrolls on corners of front, along sides, and on back. (See photos for placement.) (Scrolls also can be painted freehand with small, flat brush.) Let dry and float along outer edge of each scroll with Cocoa and 1/4" angular brush. (Figure 8).
16. With #6 shader brush, paint Rich Espresso stripes down sides of purse lid, lining them up with checks. In between stripes, paint pinstripes with script liner brush: Bahama Blue stripe at center between every Rich Espresso stripe, then alternate these colors on either side of Bahama Blue stripe around purse: Orange Twist, Tuscan Red, Avocado Dip, and Mustard Seed.
17. Paint sides of lid Lamp Black. Paint center of lid and sides and center of bottom Bahama Blue. (If desired, you can reverse pattern and paint Lamp Black swirls on inside of purse.)
18. Brush handle with light coat of Rich Espresso.
19. Let all dry. Varnish with three or four coats of DuraClear Matte Varnish. Let dry to touch between coats, and let thoroughly dry after final coat.
20. Re-attach hardware. To ensure screws set tightly, add drop of glue to threads before inserting them.
