Painting Instructions
1. Basecoat as follows: Bird and pegs -Country Red; Bird beak and star - Marigold; Carrot Nose - Cadmium Orange; Entire snowman - Deep Midnight Blue; sign - stain with Maple Gel stain and wipe off excess with paper towel. Let dry well. Sand lightly and wipe with tack cloth to remove all residue.
2. Apply Weathered Wood to the front of the snowman. Let dry according to product instructions. When snowman is dry, set on a pattern line to separate the hat brim and face. Apply Lt. Buttermilk to the snowman, omitting his hat. The heavier this coat of paint is, the larger the cracks will be. (Apply a light coat of Lt. Buttermilk for smaller cracks.) Allow this to fully dry. Fill in the hat with Country Blue (or your hat color) and watch the cracks appear.
3. Use a 1/4" checker stencil to detail the bird body. Stipple with Napa Red using a soft stencil brush.
4. Letter the sign with Country Blue (or your mug color) using a small round brush. When dry, overstroke the tops of each letter with Deep Midnight Blue. Basecoat the mittens with Country Blue (or your hat color) when the first basecoat layer is dry.
5. Set in the hat band and muffler with Napa Red. Plaid these areas with a 1/2" Rake brush. Add a touch of water to Country Blue and slowly pull lines, keeping the brush upright for the maximum effect of the Rake brush. Add a thinner line of Marigold over the first lines. Use a Liner brush to finish the plaid with double lines of Deep Midnight Blue.
6. Detail the mittens with a 1/8" checker stencil. Stipple with Deep Midnight Blue. Add shade lines to the hat and mittens with Liner using Deep Midnight Blue plus a little water.
7. Set in the cheeks with a large, soft stencil brush. Mix Blush Flesh plus Buttermilk. Use a circular motion or stipple the color in place. The eyes and mouth are set in with Black. Don't forget to give the birdie an eye. fill the snowman's lip with a wash of Blush Flesh. Shade the side of his lip with a bit of Country Red. Highlight the eyes with a dot of Lt. Buttermilk.
8. Flyspeck (spatter) all parts with Lt. Buttermilk. Apply Snow-Tex with a palette knife to the edges of the sign, star and snowman's hat. Let dry.
9. Varnish with Matte Varnish. Wire the bird to his arm. Glue nose and star in place. Attach the sign to a twig and glue into a hole in his hand.
Mugs: Use a Liner brush to paint on the mugs. Do not add water to this paint and follow product instructions. You really won't need to apply any patterns - just lines and dots will form snowflakes in a random pattern. Paint the lines first, then add either dots or little strokes with the tip of the Liner. Each flake is slightly different... just like the real ones! Flyspeck with Buttermilk Ultra Gloss to complete the mugs. Again, do not thin the paint. Follow product instructions for proper curing of the mugs.
