  • Supplies - Brush basin, palette, paper towels, sea sponge, tracing & transfer paper, pencil, stylus, transparent tape, scissors, plastic wrap, natural raffia (optional), chalk
  • 3 Gourds (Marlins)

  •     Instructions
    PREPARATION
    Make sure gourds are clean and free of dust. Mark area where fields will go with chalk, using photos for placement.

    PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS
    Note: All basecoating is done with 3/4" shader; shading, highlighting and filling in of smaller areas with 1/2" angle brush; detailing with #1 script brush; and stippling with scruffy round liner.

    1. Basecoat yellow areas of fields with Marigold; dry-brush with Burnt Orange.

    2. Basecoat brown areas of fields with Milk Chocolate; shade with Dark Chocolate.

    3. Basecoat red sections of field with Cranberry Wine; dry-brush highlights with Fiery Red.

    4. Add crop lines with Hauser Light Green; outline with Hauser Dark Green.

    5. Basecoat the sky with Salem Blue. Float clouds with Titanium White. Shade where fields meet sky with Navy Blue.

    6. Paint bases of gourds with Hauser Dark Green. Scrunch plastic wrap and lightly stipple with Hauser Light Green. On the potting shed gourd, use a dampened sea sponge to apply Dark Chocolate and Milk Chocolate to ground area.

    7. Lightly transfer patterns.

    Note: When transferring patterns, cut out various elements separately so they will fit around the gourd more easily.

    Wheelbarrow Gourd
    1. Basecoat wheelbarrow with Driftwood; shade with Dark Chocolate; highlight with Titanium White. Paint interior Dark Chocolate; add wheel and legs with Blue Mist. Shade and add detailing with Lamp Black.

    2. Basecoat orange pumpkins with Pumpkin. Shade with Dark Chocolate; highlight with Torrid Orange. Paint tendrils Marigold and stems Hauser Light Green outlined with Hauser Dark Green.

    3. Basecoat green pumpkins Hauser Dark Green. Add stippling and details with Hauser Light Green and stems with Dark Chocolate.

    4. Add detailing to all pumpkins with Lamp Black. Add Hauser Dark Green leaves; highlight and add details with Hauser Light Green.

    5. Paint the cat Lamp Black; highlight with Blue Mist.

    Potting Shed Gourd
    1. Basecoat shed with Blue Mist; shade with Navy Blue. The door and window are Navy Blue dry-brushed with Blue Mist. Add Titanium White panes.

    2. Flower box is Cranberry Wine dry-brushed with Fiery Red. Stipple in Hauser Dark Green and then Hauser Light Green for foliage.

    3. Add flowers with Cranberry Wine and then Titanium White; make Lamp Black centers.

    4. The roof, tree trunk and pot are Driftwood shaded with Dark Chocolate. Add Titanium White eves to shed.

    5. Add Lamp Black detailing to all.

    6. Watering can is Blue Mist shaded with Navy Blue; highlight with Titanium White.

    7. The cat is Lamp Black with Titanium White detailing.

    8. Stipple topiary tree with Hauser Dark Green, then Hauser Light Green. Add Marigold dots.

    9. Paint sunflowers Marigold with Dark Chocolate centers. The leaves and stalks are Hauser Light Green. Highlight with Marigold and outline with Hauser Dark Green.

    10. Paint crow Lamp Black; add detailing with Blue Mist. Beak and eye are Marigold.

    Apple Tree Gourd
    1. Basecoat tree trunk with Milk Chocolate; shade and add detailing with Dark Chocolate. Stipple tree leaves, using scruffy round brush dipped in Hauser Dark Green and then Hauser Light Green.

    2. Apples are Cranberry Wine, highlighted with Fiery Red. Add Titanium White flecks and outline with Lamp Black. The baskets are Marigold, shaded and detailed with Dark Chocolate. Highlight baskets with Titanium White.

    FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS
    1. Add butterflies randomly to all of the gourds with Marigold. Use Lamp Black for the bodies and detailing.

    2. Outline the field sections with Lamp Black.

    3. Spray gourds with Americana Matte Spray.

    4. Tie raffia to stems, if desired.
