Supplies - Gesso, white Conte pencil, small sea sponge, brush basin, palette, paper towels, pencil, stylus, scotch tape, scissors, white and gray graphite paper, Scotch scouring pad, household bleach, tack rag, tracing paper, fine-grade sandpaper, 2 small buttons, glue

Natural Gourd, about 22" around & 8-1/2" tall
|
PREPARATION
1. Wash gourd with mild solution of bleach water, scrubbing with scouring pad to remove any dried skin, mold and dirt. Rinse with clean water and dry.
2. Sand with medium-fine sandpaper to remove any bumps or rough spots. (Gourds that have noticeable divots or are uneven on the bottom can be corrected with wood filler and sanding.)
3. Paint with gesso, dry; sand lightly and tack.
4. Make a tracing, then trace main pattern lines on, using gray graphite paper. (If necessary, cut tracing apart to fit shape of gourd, or freehand pattern on with pencil.)
PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE: All shading is done with a side-loaded float unless otherwise stated.
TROUSERS
1. Basecoat with Blueberry. When dry, add some Light Buttermilk to Blueberry to make lighter value. Sponge on to give texture.
2. Shade with Deep Midnight Blue.
3. Add highlight on pocket with lighter value of Blueberry plus Light Buttermilk.
4. Add stitches in Burnt Orange.
5. Basecoat crow Lamp Black. Add Golden Straw eye and beak. Add Titanium White glint to eye. Shade beak with Burnt Sienna.
PATCHES
1. Paint one patch Hauser Medium Green; highlight center with green and white. Add Blueberry and Lamp Black stripes and Lamp Black stitches.
2. Paint one patch Burnt Orange, shaded with Burnt Umber. Add Golden Straw dots and Lamp Black stitches.
PUMPKIN HAT - Basecoat Burnt Orange; shade Burnt Umber; highlight Golden Straw. Fly-speck with Burnt Umber.
LEAVES - Basecoat Hauser Medium Green; shade Black Green; highlight Golden Straw.
FACE AND HEAD
1. Basecoat Light Buttermilk.
2. Eyes are Light Buttermik with Raw Umber pupils outlined in Lamp Black. Shade right side with float wash of Lamp Black. Glint is Titanium White.
3. Nose is Burnt Orange with Lamp Black stitches. Mouth is Raw Umber stitches.
4. Tiny, fine burlap linework on face and head is done with Sable Brown. Face and head are shaded with Burnt Umber and highlighted with Titanium White. Cheeks are dry-brushed with Burnt Orange.
5. Outline bottom edge of burlap with Raw Umber; add stitches.
STRAW HAIR AND HANDS - Basecoat Golden Straw. Shade first with Burnt Umber, then with Raw Umber. Highlight with Light Buttermilk. Outline with Raw Umber.
SHIRT
1. Basecoat Golden Straw.
2. Wide stripe is Burnt Orange with thin Light Buttermilk stripe on each side. Shade with wash of Burnt Sienna. (For deeper shading in some areas, add bit of Burnt Umber to Burnt Sienna for second shade color.)
3. Add highlights with Light Buttermilk.
4. Basecoat cuffs Light Buttermilk, shade Burnt Sienna, highlight white.
5. Basecoat buttons Deep Midnight Blue with white stitches.
FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Glue two small buttons to trouser tabs.
2. Let dry for 24 hours, then varnish with three coats of Matte Varnish.
