PREPARATION
1. Seal piece with Wood Sealer. Sand and tack to remove the sanding dust.
2. Basecoat the roof, front, back and sides of the birdhouse with Buttermilk.
3. Thin Buttermilk with a little water and apply to areas to be "smoked."
4. Hold the old knife in the candle flame until it starts to produce smoke. While the paint is still damp, hold the painted surface over the smoke and turn the piece, creating a soft pattern. The damp paint will allow the smoke to adhere to the surface. (Work on one surface of the birdhouse at a time. )
5. Basecoat the inside of the birdhouse and all cut edges with Shale Green.
6. Using the graphite paper and stylus, lightly transfer the main pattern lines onto the birdhouse.
PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS
Note: Use 3/4" wash brush for floating. Remember, the larger the brush, the softer the float.
Leaves
1. Basecoat all the leaves and the calyxes with Jade Green.
2. Shade the base of the leaves and along one side of the center vein line with soft, wide floats of Light Avocado, using either the #16 shader or the 3/4" wash brush.
3. Float highlights on the tips of the leaves and along the other side of the center vein line with Silver Sage Green. Use the Silverstone brush to dry-brush extra highlights on the leaves with Silver Sage Green.
4. Paint the vein lines on the leaves with thinned Midnite Green. When dry, over stroke the vein lines with thinned Silver Sage Green. Deepen the shading in the darkest shadows with soft floats of Midnite Green.
5. Stems and tendrils are painted with the script liner and thinned Jade Green.
Morning Glories
1. Basecoat with Winter Blue. Float Light Buttermilk in the throats of the open flowers 2 or 3 times.
2. Dry-brush highlights on the petals to create the curve of the petals with Light Buttermilk.
3. Shade the edges of the petals and above the calyxes with floats, using a 2:1 mix of Sapphire and Winter Blue. Float Admiral Blue to deepen the shading at the calyxes and to create ruffles in the petal edges.
4. Using the script liner, add the light markings on the petals with Light Buttermilk. Float Cadmium Yellow over Light Buttermilk in the throat of the flowers.
5. When dry, paint 5 stamens in each flower with Light Avocado. Add a dot of pollen to each stamen with Cadmium Yellow.
6. When dry, place a smaller dot of Georgia Clay on top of the yellow dot.
Tints
Add a few tints on some of the leaves with sheer floats of Cadmium Yellow and Georgia Clay.
FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS
Let your painting dry completely and then apply several coats of Satin Varnish, allowing adequate drying time between coats.
