    Preparation
If your spindle is new, check it for cracks or gouges. Fill with wood filler if necessary and sand. If you have an old spindle with an unknown finish on it, seal with wood sealer before painting on it. Trace the outline of the wings onto the canvas paper and cut out. Trace the pattern onto tracing paper, then transfer the pattern onto the wood piece and canvas paper.

    Painting Instructions
    1. Sky and top of base: Basecoat with Lamp (Ebony) Black. Paint the stars and dots with Antique White, using the liner brush.

    2. Spindle rings and edges of base and wings: Paint Glorious Gold. Be sure to include the inverted ring that represents the halo.

    3. Face, toes and hands: Basecoat Medium Flesh. Let dry. Transfer the details of the pattern.

    4. Using the flat brush, sideload with Light Cinnamon and float under the hair on the face, under the eyebrow lines and around the nose. Make sure the coloring is sufficient around the bottom of the nose to place Medium Flesh nostrils on it. Also shade the neck, hands, and across the bottom of the toes. Float Gooseberry Pink on both sides of the face to color the cheeks. Basecoat the eyes with Titanium (Snow) White. Add Colonial Green irises, then Lamp (Ebony) Black pupils. Highlight the eyes with a Titanium (Snow) White dot at 2 o'clock in the pupil, and a dash at 7 o'clock in the iris. Float Titanium (Snow) White across the tops of the cheeks under the eyes. Outline the eyes with thinned Dark Chocolate. Add eyebrows with the same. Paint the mouth, using Raspberry.

    5. Dress: Basecoat Deep Burgundy. Mix Deep Burgundy plus Black. Float this mix under the hair and around the sleeves. Paint it inside the sleeve openings and float it over the feet to form the hem of the gown gathered over the toes. Float Raspberry to highlight down the front of the dress to form the opening, down the fronts of the sleeves and sleeve openings. Make tiny Glorious Gold dots down the opening.

    6. Banner: Basecoat Antique White. Shade by floating Dark Chocolate around the hands. Do the lettering with the pen.

    7. Holly: Basecoat the leaves with Forest Green. Highlight the top edges of the leaves by floating with Jade. Add Jade stems and veins. Mix a little Lamp (Ebony) Black with Forest Green. Float this across the lower edges of the leaves to shade. Dot Raspberry to make berries throughout the holly.

    8. Hair: Basecoat Antique Gold, While wet, sideload the brush in Dark Chocolate and paint c-strokes here and there to make shadowy soft curls throughout the hair. Highlight the hair around the face and add lines with Antique White.

    9. Wings: Basecoat the wings Dark Burgundy except for the gold edges. Use thinned Antique White for the linework.

    Finishing Instructions
Varnish with matte varnish. Fold the canvas paper wing piece in half and attach with small tacks or staples.

*For a candlestick, attach a wood candlecup to the top of the spindle and paint gold or sky colors.
