    PREPARATION
    1. Transfer pattern outlines for each of four sides of box and extra witch's nose to 1/2" pine. If necessary for wood width available, upper part of witch's hat may be cut separately and wood glued on. Note that back board includes cat and witch cut-outs.

    2. Transfer outline of treats sign to 1/4" Baltic birch plywood. Cut out all pieces with scroll saw, using #5R blade. Cut under cat's back feet to make inside cut between front and back legs. Drill 1/8" hole in base of sign and another beside witch in top of box, as shown on pattern. Cut 1/8" dowel 4-1/4" long.

    3. Sand all pieces well. Round off sharp edges of nose on all sides except one that attaches to face. Use pattern to mark placement for nose. Wood glue it in place.

    4. Wood glue sides of box to back piece and allow glue to dry. Wood glue front of box to side pieces. When glue is dry, use 3/4" brads to secure glue. For base, trace inside box with pencil onto 1/2" pine. Cut out base, wood glue and nail it into place.

    5. Set all nails, fill all holes with wood filler, including cut under cat's back feet and any gaps where sides and base join. Sand wood filler when dry; wipe clean, then use Multi-Purpose Sealer to seal box. When sealer is dry, sand lightly and wipe clean again.

    6. Make 1/8" ball of wood filler, flatten slightly on one side, and lay aside to dry for wart on nose.

    PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE: For basecoating, use flat brush size that fits area to be painted. Use liner to apply details, angular shade to float shading and highlighting, and scruffy flat brush to dry-brush.

    1. Trace and transfer pattern.

    2. Basecoat box inside and out with Lamp Black, omitting face, hat band, pumpkins, stems and sign. Basecoat pumpkins Pumpkin, stems and hat band Avocado, sign Buttermilk and edges of sign True Ochre.

    WITCH'S FACE
    1. Glue wart to nose with wood glue and let glue dry.

    2. Basecoat face Flesh Tone. When dry, transfer pattern for features. (Cut out slot for nose to stick through and place pattern next to wood.)

    3. Basecoat eye sockets Buttermilk. When dry, transfer semi-circle iris pattern and fill in with Avocado. Float Buttermilk on lower part of iris, and paint pupil black.

    4. Shade above eyes and paint wart with Shading Flesh. Thin Shading Flesh slightly and line fold above eye and wrinkles around mouth and eyes.

    5. Shade face under hat and on either side of chin with Shading Flesh. Highlight chin by floating with Buttermilk. Basecoat eyebrows Neutral Grey and shade with black. Line eyelid and eyelashes with slightly thinned black, then basecoat teeth and place highlight dot in each eye with Buttermilk. Fill in mouth around teeth with black. Blush cheeks by dry-brushing with Burnt Orange.
    CLOTHING
    1. Float Neutral Grey to highlight hat and dress, including lower edge of collar and hat brim. Line collar trim with a Burnt Orange and an Avocado stripe. Trace pattern for stars and paint with True Ochre. Use several coats of paint.

    2. Using #6 flat brush, paint Burnt Orange checks on hatband; then float Plantation Pine shading on outer ends and dry-brush True Ochre highlighting in middle of hatband.

    3. Outline stars with slightly thinned Burnt Orange, and dot dress with Buttermilk.

    2. When black has dried, repeat spattering with Buttermilk. Allow to dry. Spray again with Americana Matte Spray.

    3. Attach wads of Spanish Moss to undersides of hat and next to face, using glue gun.
