DecoArt Products Required
Brushes by Loew-Cornell - #7550 Flat 3/4"; #7000 Round #3; #7350 Liner #00; #7520 Filbert Rakes 1/4" & 1/2"; #7850 Deerfoot Stippler or Old Scruffy Brush
Supplies - Brush basin, palette, small wool sea sponge, paper towels, tracing & white & grey graphite paper, pencil, stylus, scotch tape, scissors, 2 small buttons, medium fine sandpaper, Scotch scouring pad, household bleach, tack cloth, sharp knife, hot glue gun & glue sticks

PREPARATION
1. Wash with mild solution of bleach water, scrubbing with scouring pad to remove any dried skin, mold and dirt. Rinse and dry.
2. Sand with sandpaper and remove any bumps or rough spots. (Noticeable divots or uneven areas can be corrected with wood filler or sanding.)
3. Coat with Multi-Purpose Sealer. Lightly sand and tack.
4. Trace and transfer pattern, cutting tracing apart, if necessary, to fit shape of gourd.
PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS
Note: All shading is done with side-load float, unless otherwise stated.
1. Use 3/4" flat brush to basecoat Santa Red. When dry, a stipple brush or sea sponge may be used to apply Antique Maroon and/or Deep Burgundy over basecoat.
2. When dry, lightly sponge with Copper.
3. Basecoat cap band, collar and cuffs Lamp Black.
Mittens
1. Mold mittens by flattening out some Paperclay to thickness of 1/8" to 1/4" and cutting out with sharp knife. Wet surface and press mittens on. Let dry overnight.
2. Basecoat with 1:1 mix of Evergreen and Plantation Pine. Line with 1:1 mix of True Ochre and Raw Sienna. Shade Lamp Black; highlight with True Ochre/Raw Sienna mix.
Face
1. Basecoat face and lip Medium Flesh. Trace facial features on; use liner and thinned Burnt Sienna to place in with very fine lines the nose and eyes.
2. With #3 round brush, float 2:1 mix of Burnt Sienna and Medium Flesh above eyes to form lids, above mustache and side of nostril flange, and across forehead at edge of cap. Float soft line under eyes to form small bags.
3. Float soft wash of Santa Red above mustache and below nose. Highlight top of cheeks and nose with Titanium White (dry-brush, if desired).
4. Paint irises with Burnt Sienna. With Lamp Black, add pupil and lash line, using liner. Add white areas and glint in eye with Titanium White.
Coat
With 3/4" flat brush, shade with Antique Maroon, adding a bit of Lamp Black to make darker, if desired.
Hair, Eyebrows, Beard & Mustache
Put in with 1/4" or 1/2" filbert rake, using Titanium White and a 1:1 mix of Dove Grey and Neutral Grey. Shade with wash of Lamp Black.
Cap and Cuffs
1. With liner, line outside edge with True Ochre/Raw Sienna mix. Add Lamp Black comma strokes and embellishments with True Ochre/Raw Sienna mix.
2. Roses are stroked in with Deep Burgundy and white, using #3 round brush. Leaves are 1:1 mix of Evergreen and Plantation Pine with a dot of white.
3. With #3 round brush, float here and there on roses and leaves with Copper.
FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Bottom may be decorated, if desired, by painting Lamp Black line around and decorating with stroke and line work, using liner.
2. Varnish with Satin Varnish.
3. Use glue gun to attach two buttons to front of coat.
