PREPARATION
1. Wash piece with mild soap and water; dry thoroughly.
2. Apply pattern with grey graphite. The lines should be very fine, but clearly visible.
PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS
Note: Dress the brush with Candle Painting Medium before loading for the first application of color in each area.
Sky
Paint with 5/8" brush that has been side-loaded with color. Turn the color side of the brush toward the horizon and walk upward. Each darker value stays within the previous one. Use Moon Yellow first, applying as many times as needed to obtain a glowing sky. Follow with Deep Burgundy.
Background Trees
Paint a suggestion of background trees at the horizon line, softening upward into the sky. Dampen the area first, then tap in the trees with a medium value of Antique Maroon and Black Green.
House and Shed
1. Basecoat walls with a pale wash of Burnt Umber. When dry, shade with a side load of deeper Burnt Umber.
2. Tap in the suggestion of stones with the corner of the brush and Burnt Umber. When dry, add a deeper shade and darker touches on the stones with Bittersweet Chocolate.
3. Darken under the roof line and where the shed sits behind the house with Bittersweet Chocolate and Black Green. Add accents of Deep Burgundy on the left hand side of the house. Then add a glow of Moon Yellow to the same area.
4. Paint window openings with Black Green and Antique Maroon. Add shutters with Black Green and Moon Yellow. Highlight the shutters with a line of Moon Yellow and line pane divisions with Silver Sage Green and Black Green.
5. Paint the chimney with Antique Maroon. Shade the dark side with a line of Black Green. Add glow to the light side with Moon Yellow.
Roof
1. Basecoat the entire roof area with a wash of Light Buttermilk. Shade with a side load of Silver Sage Green, Black Green and Bittersweet Chocolate. Add deeper shadings with Black Green and Antique Maroon.
2. Paint a touch of glow on the top and left eave of the house roof with Deep Burgundy, then Moon Yellow. Highlight the roof in other areas with Light Buttermilk and a touch of Silver Sage Green.
3. Add a hint of smoke coming from the chimney with a pale value of Black Green and Antique Maroon. Dry load this onto a smudge tint brush. When dry, highlight with Light Buttermilk and a touch of Silver Sage Green.
Snowy Ground Areas
1. Shade these areas with Silver Sage Green, leaving porcelain in light areas. Add darker shading with Silver Sage Green, Black Green and Bittersweet Chocolate.
2. Lay in the suggestion of a path with the same colors. Deepen the path more by adding more Bittersweet Chocolate to the mixture. Add some sunset glow to the path and the area of ground near the horizon and house with Deep Burgundy, then Moon Yellow.
3. Highlights may be added where needed with Light Buttermilk and a touch of Silver Sage Green or Light Buttermilk.
Pond
1. Paint the sunset reflection in the pond with Moon Yellow, Deep Burgundy and Antique Maroon. When dry, apply some shading at the outside edge of the pond with Silver Sage Green, Black Green and Bittersweet Chocolate.
2. Add fir tree reflections with softer values of fir tree colors. Darken the bank areas with Black Green and Bittersweet Chocolate. Streak highlights on the ice with Light Buttermilk and Silver Sage Green, then Light Buttermilk.
Fir Trees
1. Paint trunk placement with a chisel line of Black Green. Side load angle brush with Black Green and a touch of Antique Maroon and dab the foliage on the tree. Cross back and forth across the trunk, moving from one side of the tree to the other.
2. When dry, deepen some areas with a stronger value of Black Green and Antique Maroon.
3. Highlight fir trees in the foreground with Light Buttermilk and Silver Sage Green. Lighten the mixture with more Light Buttermilk to highlight the front tree. Touches of glow are added to the foreground trees with Deep Burgundy and then Moon Yellow.
4. Background fir trees behind the structure are painted with softer values of the same color. They are highlighted very softly with Silver Sage Green, and a slight glow is added on the left hand side with Moon Yellow and Light Buttermilk.
Tree Trunks & Underbrush
1. Paint the large tree trunk and all small bushes and trees with a liner brush loaded in Bittersweet Chocolate. Darken some areas with Black Green and Bittersweet Chocolate.
2. Highlight and glow are added with Moon Yellow and Deep Burgundy.
3. Add a bit of snow here and there with Silver Sage Green and Light Buttermilk. Lighten some areas more with Light Buttermilk.
4. Use the filbert loaded with Bittersweet Chocolate and a touch of Black Green to pull grass near pond and add touches here and there in the foreground.
Antiquing
1. Load a large angle brush with Candle Painting Medium. Side load the brush with Silver Sage Green and float around the edges of the box lid and the lower edge of the box itself.
2. Use the mop brush to soften and distribute the color. Repeat this with Black Green and a touch of Antique Maroon. Build until desired depth of color is achieved. Allow to set up for approximately 1 to 2 hours.
3. Dampen a square of lint-free paper towel or cosmetic wipe with rubbing alcohol. Wipe away color from the embossed design at box edges and lower box.
FINISHING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Wipe the entire box with a tack cloth.
2. Spray with 8 to 12 light coats of Americana Matte Spray, letting dry between coats.
