  •     Instructions
In this lesson, we are going to concentrate on the painting of the magnificent Zhostovo rose.

    Background Preparation
Due to the thin layering and glazing techniques, it is important to have a smooth surface to paint on. Do not skip the wet sanding step.

    1. Sand the surface well. Seal with Multi-Purpose Sealer. Sand again. Remove the dust with a tack cloth.
    2. Use a large, flat brush to apply one coat of the background color. Dry. Sand well and remove dust. Apply a second coat of paint in the same manner.
    3. Wet sanding - sprinkle water liberally over the entire painted surface. Spread the water around until the surface is completely covered. Using fine sandpaper (600 grit) and very light pressure, sand in a circular motion.
    4. Wipe the sanded surface dry with a paper towel. Allow to dry completely (1/2 hour). Wetting the surface softens the paint. Touching it too soon will leave fingerprints.
    5. Using a very light touch and white graphite paper, transfer only the shape and form lines to the painting surface.

An Overview of the Basic Zhostovo Technique - Slava's Style
    1. Base paint the object, using the appropriate strokes, in a middle value, leaving an unpainted area for the shadow or a major color change.
    2. Work quickly, keeping the medium value in a brush ready to use. Using a second brush, add the dark value shadows beginning in the unpainted area. Blend to soften the color transition where dark meets medium by changing to the medium value brush and working the colors back and forth.
    3. Moisten each area with a damp #6 or #8 filbert brush (depending on the size of the area to be painted) and reapply the shadow where necessary. Moisten each area with a damp filbert brush and add additional shadow colors.
    4. Moisten each area with a damp filbert brush and overstroke lightly, using transparent paint and the highlight color. Use a clean, damp filbert brush to soften the strokes.
    5. Add vein lines, stem lines and decorations using a liner brush.

    Painting Procedure
NOTE: For the basic stroke work, including stroking on the highlighting and shading colors, use the round brushes. For moistening the areas, softening the edges of applied color in strokes or washes, and for blending, use the filbert brushes. The brush size will be determined by the size of the flower, the petals, or the area which is being painted. This technique takes a little "getting used to" as it is a brush mix technique and requires applying the paint with a fully loaded brush onto a moistened surface. This is not a floated color technique. One filbert brush is reserved to carry only water so the painting surface can be constantly moistened. PINK ROSE
Base - Cherry Red + Buttermilk. First Shading - Raw Umber + a touch of Lamp Black. Second Shading - Cherry Red. Highlight - White Wash

    1. Stroke in the bowl of the rose first. Use a #4 Yarka sable round brush loaded with Cherry Red and brush mixed with a small amount of Buttermilk to create a medium value. At the front or bottom of the bowl, stroke sideways (parallel to the outside of the bowl of the rose) forming a slightly scalloped shape that resembles an eye. The back of the rose is stroked from the outside edge to the center. Be careful not to leave ridges. Leave an unpainted center area to begin the shading. Don't clean the brush. Using a second round brush, mix Raw Umber and a touch of Lamp Black. Shade the rose center. While the paint is still wet, switch to the first brush still loaded with the base color to soften the shadow out into the back of the flower.
    2. With the same base mix and #4 brush used in step one, stroke in the apron petals, bringing them almost to the edge of the bowl of the flower. Leave an unpainted space between the bowl and the petals. This unpainted space creates an area where the shadow color can be easily made stronger. Using a second round brush for the shadow color, brush mix a touch of Lamp Black into Cherry Red (dark value). While the base color is still wet, shade the back of the petals, beginning in the area left unpainted. Use the brush loaded with the base color to soften the edge of the shading towards the middle of the petals. Paint two darker petals on the shadow side of the apron by brush mixing into more Cherry Red to darken the base color in the brush. This entire procedure (steps 1 and 2) should be repeated a second time. Double painting the basic shape will give a more solid background so that transparent areas will not fight with the multitude of strokes that are added in the final stages to create the petals.
    3. Add a transparent wash of the base color around the outside of the basic rose shape to create the shadow petals.
    4. Moisten the area about to be painted with water using a #8 Yarka sable filbert brush. With a #4 Yarka round brush loaded with Cherry Red, extend the shadow in the center of the flower to the outer back edge. Drag this color part way around to the front of the flower on the shadow side. Soften the edge of the color out with a clean, damp filbert brush.
    5. Moisten the area. Using Cherry Red loaded onto a #3 round brush, softly shadow the outside edges of the apron petals to give the impression of rolling under. With a clean, damp #6 filbert (the third brush), soften the inside edge of the shadow color to make it fade out into the base color. Also add more shadow color to the inside of the petals. this second shadow color should cover the original shading and extend further into the petals. This creates two values of shading. The first one is the darkest and covers the smallest area. The second one is lighter and covers a larger area. Darken the petals on the shadow side of the flower by transparently washing Cherry Red over the base color.
    6. Load a #2 Yarka round brush with the shadow mix. Carefully position the petals on the front of the bowl of the rose by laying in the shadow behind them. Follow the shape of the scallops at the bottom of the bowl. Lay in a stripe of shadow color. Use a clean #4 Yarka filbert brush to soften out the edge of this color away from the petal.
    7. Moisten the surface. Using a flattened #4 Yarka that has been side-loaded with White Wash brush mixed with a touch of Cherry Red, stroke in the impression of tiny petals around the flower center in front of the shadow stripes which created the petal positions (step #4). Soften the inside of these petals by blending the color out with a clean filbert brush. Strengthen the shadow behind each petal with a brush mix of Cherry Red and a touch of Lamp Black loaded on another round brush (#3). Moving back and forth from light to dark, create the petal with the light color and shadow behind it with the dark color. Keep the surface moist. Restroke the center with Cherry Red to clean up and brighten.
    8. Highlights - Moisten the surface with a filbert brush (#8). Side load a second brush (#4 round) and float the appropriate highlight color over the bottom of the bowl petals and the top of the petals around the flower center. Soften the inside edges of the color with a third brush (#6 filbert).
    9. Accent the remaining petals with White Wash, keeping the surface moist. Add highlight strokes to the center of the large apron petals - fading the color of the strokes out as they move away from the center. Soften the edges of these strokes with a clean, damp filbert.
    10. Stipple the flower center with Raw Umber and Lemon Yellow. Add pollen dots of a brush mix of Buttermilk and Lemon Yellow. Outline the apron petals with White Wash using a liner brush. Outline the shadow petals with a darker mix of White Wash and Cherry Red.
    11. Follow the same procedure for the rose buds. Stroke in the basic petal shapes with the medium mix. Shadow the flower center and the inside of the petals with the shadow mix. Highlight with Buttermilk.

    Filler Flowers
Base - Cherry Red + a touch of Buttermilk. Shade - Lamp Black. Highlight - Cherry Red + Buttermilk. Accent Center - Lemon Yellow

    1. Using the liner brush and a brush mix of Cherry Red and Buttermilk, stroke in circle shapes to form four or five petal flowers.
    2. Slip-slap a little Lamp Black into the flower centers.
    3. Flatten a #2 Yarka round brush and load with a light value mix of Cherry Red and Buttermilk. Paint a smaller, lighter highlight circle in each of the original circle petal shapes. Paint a Lemon Yellow circle outline in the center.

    Leaves:
Base leaves - Hauser Medium Green + Buttermilk. Tip - Cherry Red + Buttermilk. First shading - Black Green. Second shading - Black Forest Green. Highlight - Buttermilk

    1. For the green leaves - load the #3 Yarka round brush with medium value base mix. Paint the leaves one at a time so the base color will remain wet while adding the shading. Stroke in the medium green part of the leaf. Don't clean the brush. Leave an unpainted area at the tip. Quickly load a second Yarka round brush with a mix of Cherry Red and Buttermilk. While the leaf base color is still wet, add the tip color. Change back to the brush still loaded with the base mix and blend the two colors together. Don't clean the brush.
    2. Keeping the surface moist, load the #3 Yarka brush with Black Green. Paint in the shadow area and add some of this darker shading to create a vein line. Keep this darkest shadow area in close to the base of the leaf. It is not the final shading step. Note: Zhostovo leaves are always shaded on the outer or high side of the vein line curve.
    3. Moisten the leaf with a filbert brush. Using Black Forest Green, glaze over the top of the shading already applied. Extend this second color further into the leaf than the original shading. Soften the inside edges of the color with a clean, damp filbert.
    4. Glaze Cherry Red over the tips of the leaves.
    5. Highlights - Load a #3 Yarka round brush with a mix of Buttermilk and a touch of Lemon Yellow. Keeping the surface moist, softly apply the highlight strokes. Soften the ends of the strokes using a clean, damp filbert brush.
    6. Accent the leaves using a liner brush and a mix of Lemon Yellow and Buttermilk.
    7. Stroke in stem lines using a brush mix of Cherry Red, Buttermilk and a touch of Raw Umber. Add filler strokes of the same mix.
