    INSTRUCTIONS

    NOTES:

Let dry completely between painting steps.

Use a #10 flat brush for all steps, except where otherwise indicated.

    1. Basecoat the menu board with one or two coats of Black Americana Chalkboard Paint using a 3/4" or larger flat brush.
    2. Trace and transfer the pattern onto the board using white or grey transfer paper or any other color that will show up on black. Only trace the first layer of the poinsettia petals.
    3. Basecoat the entire pattern with Snow White. (Basecoating with Snow White allows the colors to be vibrant on the black background by masking the very dark blackboard paint.)
    4. Instruction #3
    5. Basecoat the poinsettia petals with Royal Fuchsia and the leaves with Irish Moss.
    6. Instruction #4
    7. Dry-brush the left side (sunlit side) of the poinsettia petals with Watermelon Slice. Wipe the excess paint from the brush, but do not wash.
    8. Instruction #5
    9. Pick up Berry Red (shaded side) and dry-brush on the right side of the poinsettia petals. Wipe the excess paint from the brush, but do not wash.
    10. Instruction #6
    11. Pick up a small amount of Royal Fuchsia and blend the petal in the center and outward to smooth out any rough dry-brush areas.
    12. Create an inky 1:1 mix of Royal Fuchsia and Snow White and paint the veins of the poinsettia petals with a 10/0 script liner brush.
    13. Instruction #8
    14. Apply a thin basecoat of Avocado on the leaves.
    15. Instruction #9
    16. Shade the leaves with Blue Mist by dry-brushing, starting at the leaf edge pulling into the center.
    17. Highlight the leaves with Olive Green using the same method as the shading.
    18. Create an inky 1:1 mix of Olive Green and Snow White and paint the leaf veins with a 10/0 script liner brush.
    19. Trace and transfer the second layer of poinsettia petals.
    20. Using the same procedure as steps 2-7, basecoat the top petals with Snow White, followed by a light coat of Bubblegum Pink. Dry-brush Royal Fuchsia on the left side (sunlit side) and Watermelon Slice on the right side (shaded side).
    21. Instruction #14
    22. Create an inky 1:1 mix of Bubblegum Pink and Snow White and paint the veins on the top layer of poinsettia petals with a 10/0 script liner brush.
    23. Instruction #15
    24. Using a 1/2" angle brush, shade the petals with Alizarin Crimson between the first and second layer and any other place you want a petal to be separated from a leaf or another petal.
    25. Instruction #16
    26. Using a cotton tip swab or the end of a small brush, dot the center of the flower with Snow White. When dry, apply Saffron Yellow to the same dots, followed by smaller dots of Festive Green.
    27. Paint the ribbon with Emperor’s Gold, and shade with Burnt Umber using a 1/2" angle brush.
    28. Instruction #18
    29. Add berries using a 1/4" dauber or cotton swab and Emperor’s Gold.
    30. Basecoat the letters using Snow White, and then apply two or three coats of Emperor’s Gold.
    31. Using a 10/0 script liner brush loaded with Burnt Umber and Snow White, add the pine branches to the menu board.
    32. Paint the pine clusters with a 10/0 script liner brush. Layer the colors as follows: Avocado is the base color and is applied to the total cluster. Layer Festive Green on top of the Avocado, but paint the strokes so that they alternate so as not to cover the Avocado. Then add some strokes using Blue Mist in the shaded areas and Olive Green in the highlighted areas.
    33. Instruction #22
    34. Strengthen the highlighted area with a few strokes of Snow White. Similarly to connecting a flower to the stamens, connect the pine sprig back to the branch with a dot or a stroke or two of Burnt Umber. Blend the paint back into the branch so it looks natural.
    35. Apply two to three coats of Emperor’s Gold to the rim, or outside edges, of the menu board.
