I love using Instagram, and sometimes I capture the best moments with this app. I couldn’t wait to try the new Photo Tranfer Decou-Page to take some of my favorite Instagram pictures out of my phone and put them together into this fun keepsake photo cube craft.

Items needed:

  • Americana Decou-Page Photo Transfer Medium 8oz - Americana Decou-Page Photo Transfer Medium
  • Americana Decou-Page (Glue-Sealer-Finish) 2oz - Americana Decou-Page Matte
  • 3” x 3” Wood Block
  • Sponge Brush
  • Color copies of Instagram photos
  • Paper Towel
  • Scrabble craft letters and stickers (optional)

I started with a 3” x 3” wood block and color copies of my photos cut out and sized to be 3 inch squares as well. Since laser copies transfer better than inkjet prints, I printed them off of my computer and took them to my local copy shop to make color copies. I used my X-ACTO knife to cut them out to size. I picked four photographs to go around 4 of the sides of the cubes.

The technique of using Photo Transfer Decou-Page is the same as using regular decoupage, except for this time you want to put the image face down on your surface instead of facing outward. Also, keep in mind, that this creates a mirror image of your design or photo, so if you using type you will want to flip the orientation.

After you apply a coat of Photo Transfer Decou-Page on one side of your cube surface and the front of your photo, place the photo copy on top. Press firmly and smooth out any bubbles. Do NOT put another layer of Decou-Page on top.

Continue until you have all four sides covered with your photos, keeping in mind the orientation of your cube and making sure all your photographs are facing the same way. Then let it sit and dry for at least 8 hours.

Now it is time to reveal the photo transfer. With a clean sponge brush apply water right on top of your decoupaged photos.

You will notice that it starts to reveal your image below. Let the water soak in for about 2-3 minutes.

Then with a dry paper towel or sponge, carefully start to rub off the top layer of the paper.

To seal each image, I finished off the photo sides with a layer of regular matte finish Deou-Page and let dry.

I finished off my photo cube craft with some coordinating paint and various embellishments. The photo transfer process gives off a nice vintage look, and I love how the wood grain peeks through my photos. I wanted to continue that look with the paint. I applied a small amount of paint with a wet paper towel, rubbing off as much off as I could. This gave a colored wood stained look rather than a painted one. I used the same technique for the bottom of the cube.

I used craft Scrabble letters to spell out “LOVE” and added some fun scrapbook stickers as well. I used the Decou-Page both as a glue and sealer for my top embellishments.
