Rainbow Glass Stained Chevron Art Tile

Sometimes the best canvases to create art with can’t be found in an arts and craft store. You can create some beautiful art with a common white floor tile from your local hardware store. Here’s how to make a rainbow chevron pattern glass stained tile that is sure to brighten up any room.

Items needed:

• Washi Tape
• Xacto knife
• Self-adhesive black foam sheet
• 8” x 6” white floor/wall tile

Instructions:

First you need to mask off your chevron pattern onto your white tile. I used ½” thick washi tape. It was the perfect width, and washi tape is just sticky enough to mask off any area, but not too sticky that you can’t easily peel it off when you’re done.

Start by taping down a large diagonal stripe from the upper left corner to the bottom middle of the tile. Tape down the other side to create a large “V”.

Then, continue to interlace the tape strips until you get a diamond pattern.

Fold over the tape edges around the back of your tile and press down the strips to make sure they are all secure.

Now it is time to do some “chevron surgery”. Using an Xacto knife, cut away the strips that aren’t needed. You only need to use a light touch if you are using a sharp blade. You don’t want to cut into the tile. After you make a cut, use the tip of your knife to pull up the tape.

You can create a smaller chevron pattern, or do like I did, and make one large chevron pattern on your tile.

Now it is time to add some color, and make a really cool rainbow effect with your glass stains. The glass stains are the perfect consistency to apply to the tile and blend the colors together. Gently squeeze a little color onto your first stripe in the middle of the white chevron pattern, applying just enough that it fills the stripe nicely. I started from left to right, and applied colors next to each other that I knew would blend well.  

For instance, I wouldn’t suggest blending the orange with the aqua glass stain, because they are complementary colors and would create a muddy brown blend. But the aqua mixed with the pink creates a really beautiful purple color.

The next step is really important. Let dry flat for at least 24 hours! Be patient. Trust me, it will be worth it.

After the paint on the tile is dry, peel away the tape to reveal the white. If some of the glass stain has gone over the tape, you can use your Xacto knife again to lightly score and cut it away.

I finished off my art piece, by lining the back of the tile with a sheet of self-adhesive black foam cut to size. This added some stability and cushion to the back of the tile.

Now you are ready to display your new art piece. Glass stain is a decorative finish, so your art piece shouldn’t be used as a coaster or trivet. Show it off on a mantle, or put it in a thick frame and hang it on the wall.

Mine looks great next to my orange glass vase, and colored votives on our fireplace mantle.
