Sheila Bergner-Landry

I have been doing art and creative things for as long as I remember. From the time I was very young, I love to draw, paint and do crafts. As I got older and purchased my own house, I learned to do a range of things from drywall to ceramic tile installation to installing hard wood floors. Somehow the satisfaction of doing things myself became quite addictive.

About 20 years ago, my girlfriends' father introduced us to scroll sawing. At the time I was doing decorative painting and we loved to be able to cut our own wood to paint without having to ask the men to do it. I immediately fell in love with the intricate process and soon began designing my own patterns.

One thing led to another and I met a group of editors from All American Crafts publications at a trade show in Chicago. They saw my work and I was asked to allow them to publish some of my projects in several of their magazines. (Craftworks, Paintworks and Creative Woodworks and Crafts). That was in 1997 and I have been working with them ever since. I earned the title of 'Contributing Editor' from Creative Woodworks and Crafts magazine shortly after and have had well over 100 projects published in their magazines.

Since my children are grown now, I have become a full time designer of both scroll saw and painting patterns. I developed my own website ( where I sell my patterns, as well as offer free articles and patterns. I still work for the magazine and I am proud to say that I have had at least one project in each issue for over nine years running, many times two or three. I still try to learn more every day and hope to learn to build larger items such as furniture. I am looking at this forum to make new friendships, learn new skills and hopefully help others too.

I grew up in Chicago but came to Nova Scotia almost ten years ago. I have come to love Canada too, and feel that I am privileged to be able to call two countries home. My children are still in the Chicago area. My son is a Joliet, Illinois police officer living in Plainfield, IL and my daughter is still finding her way. I have had a busy life so far, but truly enjoy where my life is at now. I guess I am a workaholic, because I live, breath and sleep thinking about creating fun projects in both painting and woodworking. I also love technology and computers and get around here pretty good! Computers are imperative to my business and also my social life, as I keep in touch with my friends and children and also produce my own patterns. (How come there aren't 48 hours in a day?) I guess it keeps me out of trouble.

I am not married, but with a wonderful, talented man who shares my love of woodworking, computers and creating. He supports my creativity every day and is also turning out to be a wonderful designer and an asset to my business and life.

So I guess life is good! Sorry to be so lengthy, but I guess I have had a full life. And I know I am not done yet!

Thanks for reading and I look forward to getting to know everyone a lot better.
